Entrepreneurs can win big prizes

2017-05-17 06:01

Entrepreneurs are encouraged to enter the 2017 Entrepreneur of the Year competition in which prizes valued at more than R2 million can be won.

This includes cash prizes of R60 000 for each main category winner and R160 000 for the overall winner.

The closing date for is 31 May. The competition is sponsored by Sanlam and Business Partners Limited.

Candidates can enter in five categories, open for entrepreneurs from emerging to small and medium businesses.

Celebrating its 29th year, the competition seeks to promote entrepreneurship in South Africa as a viable career path.

It honours dedicated entrepreneurs who have made great strides in their businesses and whose passion for growing their businesses and communities inspires and stimulates the nation.

Ben Bierman, managing director at Business Partners, said the competition was a platform to reward and acknowledge the ongoing hard work of entrepreneurs.

“Just as important as government’s efforts in building an inclusive, supportive and thriving entrepreneurial eco system, is the need for society to encourage and support entrepreneurs in starting and growing businesses which positively contribute towards the country’s growth.

“We need to be creating more platforms that stimulate and support entrepreneurship.

“We should work to promote and celebrate the successes of entrepreneurs – those indivi-duals that tirelessly, often without recognition, contribute to growing the local Gross Domestic Product and improving employment fi-gures.”

Bierman added that industry leaders should be leveraging this to drive entrepreneurial participation.

“About 73% of the country’s adult population sees entrepreneurship as a good career choice, according to the 2017 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor report,” he said.

Johan Eksteen, managing director of Agricon (a global specialist in the design and manufacturing of pelleting solutions for the agricultural and industrial industries, based in Bloemfontein) was the 2016 winner.

Entrepreneurs interested in entering the competition can download entry forms online at www.eoy.co.za.

They can also interact with fellow entrepreneurs and entrants on Twitter @EOY_SA and Facebook at eoy.sa.
