The Northern Cape Dance Pages Public Performance is taking the right direction in developing local dancers, as could be seen in this year’s event.

Parents and local supporters were in awe from the first day of the performance at the Northern Cape Theatre on Tuesday, 26 September.

The manager of the Mayibuye Dance Academy, Letlhogonolo Lucky Nche, regards the event as a success due to the dancers’ confidence.

The dancers displayed the same spirit and enthusiasm throughout the whole three days of the programme which continued at the Mayibuye Multipurpose Centre.

Nche says Dance Pages also created job opportunities for different fields in local arts.

“There were broad opportunities to explore within this production, such as stage settings, lights, designers and more,” he says.

For the first time the dan-cers had the opportunity to perform in a theatre, which, according to Nche, is a move in the right direction.

The production saw about 15 dancers of, among others, Moving Into Dance, the Ubuhle Development Foundation, the Mayibuye Dance Academy and even one performer from Warrenton, Tebogo Khumalo, sharing the stage.

“This year was the fourth event of Dance Pages, and two venues, the Mayibuye Multipurpose Centre and the Northern Cape Theatre, were used on different days for performances.”

Nche says the performances were a mixture of professional and semi-professional dan-cers, aiming to grow the skills of the dancers at local level.

“We are getting there, especially after giving local dancers theatre exposure. We have also been working with productions from other districts outside the Francis Baard District.

Nche promised a bigger and even better event next year.

“We want to emphasise to our community that art is broad, and our focus is currently dance, but in theatre, a lot of opportunities exist.”
