Facts put straight

The Hawks have cleared the air regarding the blunder that led to a Bloemfontein woman walking away scot-free after the dismissal of a case against her in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court.

On 16 January the senior prosecutor dismissed a case against Nthabiseng Betty Mokhali (49), after she had been arrested and charged for the possession of over R1 million in counterfeit money and the contravention of South African Reserve Bank Section 32 regulations.

According to Capt. S’fiso Nyakane, provincial spokesperson, the reason given for the dismissal was that members of the police’s Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Crime Intelligence did not apply section 251 (a) when they had set entrapment to arrest Mokhali.

He said the arrest was carried out by the TRT and Crime Intelligence and not the Hawks, as was reported in Expresson Wednesday (09/05).
