Fans remain eligible

Football fans that voted for all the players released by Kaizer Chiefs are still eligible to win the Champion Coach prize.

The sponsor, Carling Black Label, has assured fans who voted for the departed players that they are still eligible for the Champion Coach prize, which is part of the Carling Black Label Cup between rivals Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Chiefs announced on Tuesday, 13 June, that they have released and loaned out a number of players. Those released were by mutual consent, the team stated.

The players released are defender Siyanda Xulu, strikers Camaldine Abraw and Lewis Macha, and midfielders Lucky Baloyi and Siphelele Mthembu.

Except for Mthembu, whose contract has expired, Amakhosi stated that the contracts of the other four players were terminated by mutual consent. This is in line with the club’s rebuilding process for the 2017-’18 season.

Chiefs announced they will also allow midfielder Innocent Mkhabela to make his loan move to Platinum Stars permanent, while the club have indicated they will allow Zimbabwean forward Michelle Katsvairo to leave on loan.

The decision to release players had no bearing in the Champion Coaches, as fans that voted will be credited with a super vote per position, which will enable them to still influence formation and the starting line-up.

Therefore, the super vote affords fans that voted for players who have been released the power to re-allocate votes to their new preferred players.

The Champion Coach concept is one of the innovations aimed at raising the level of the one-day tournament between arch-rival Soweto giants, Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

The two sides will face off on 29 July in the FNB Stadium for the glory of the seventh cup featuring the two football giants in South Africa.

This year’s edition has seen another innovation which affords Champion Coaches a chance to select their ideal formations of the four available.

The four formations provided to the Champion Coaches in this year’s edition are: the most used 4-4-2, giving both attacking and defensive balance; the offensive 3-5-2 and 3-4-3, placing more players up the pitch for high pressure football and the most popular attacking formation in modern football; and 4-3-3, leaving enough cover at the back for possible counter-attacks.

It will be interesting to see which of the four formations available to the Champion Coaches will be selected for combat, as supporters of the two Soweto giants prepare their teams for battle on the field of play.

Champion Coaches of Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are urged to book their seats for the 2017 Carling Black Label Champion Cup.

Tickets are available in three categories:
