Fans across the continent will be afforded an opportunity to not only represent their country in a continental showpiece competition, but can also use their skills to score a trip to the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.

It has been confirmed that Castle Africa’s 5s, which has been dubbed Africa’s biggest five-a-side tournament, will be played in six countries – Lesotho, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe – from Thursday, 1 February, until the end of May.

M-Sports Marketing and Communication states that the five-a-side tournament has the potential of becoming the hub where friendships will be created, nurtured and cemented on the football field.

The tournament is proud to have the backing of one of the world’s greatest athletes from Africa, former Cameroonian national team striker Samuel Eto’o, who is a four-time recipient of the African Footballer of the Year award and has played in three World Cup tournaments.

Eto’o, who currently plies his trade for Turkish side Antalyaspor, was one of the world’s leading stars when he banged in the goals for Spanish side Barcelona and Italy’s Inter Milan, winning 14 major trophies, including the prestigious Uefa Champions League on three occasions.

His deadly accuracy in front of the goal saw him claim numerous individual awards.

Delighted at this milestone was Vaughn Croeser, Castle Lager’s brand director.

“Castle Lager has always fortified the bonds of belonging and true friendship.

“We believe that social football is an ideal platform to sustain these significant societal interactions.

“We are excited to grow our footprint in the continent through this five-a-side tournament, which is a progressive, fast paced and accessible way to play the beautiful game,” Croeser was quoted as saying.

The tournament is reported to be open to players from Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Swaziland, South Africa and Tanzania, who have been tasked with forming five-a-side teams with their friends to play the beautiful game, build close circles of camaraderie and share a round of the friendship brew.

Teams will be required to register for the playoffs in their countries and be ready to bring their A-game to the playoffs in February.

Country winners will be flown to Lusaka, Zambia, for the final games.

Mentoring them will be ambassadors from their respective countries, all esteemed footballers who enjoyed rewarding careers whilst playing the game, such as Lehlohonolo Seema (Lesotho), Tinashe Nengomasha (Zimbabwe), Christopher Katongo (Zambia), Siza Dlamini (Swaziland) and Ivo Mapunda (Tanzania).

Five-a-side football is applauded for its massive growth shown in recent years, and is played by millions across the globe.

  • Eto’o, together with the quintet, who are role-models to not only fans from their countries but to all aspiring footballers across the continent, will show the spirit of friendship, unity and an understanding of the value of sport for health and as a competition. Promising a memorable experience, the consumers wishing to be part of the campaign, stand the chance to win a trip to the Fifa World Cup in Russia.

They simply have to purchase six Castle Lagers and then follow the instructions before entries close on 24 March.
