The brutal attack of the Free State farmer Mimie Jacobs has sent shock waves through the country. This recipient of the 2016 Free State Farmer of the Year award was attacked on her farm, Rosemead, on Saturday (22/02). Jacobs was reportedly attacked by three unknown men. Three armed assailants allegedly stabbed her with a knife, tied her up and robbed her.She managed to escape and ran approximately 5 km to a neighbouring farm to find help. An ambulance and the police were summoned.She was admitted to Mediclinic Bloemfontein with severe stab wounds to the head. On Sunday, doctors safely removed a piece of the knife still lodged in the wound. She is recuperating in hospital.Mariette Pittaway, DA whip in the Free State Legislature, has expressed shock regarding the attack. “The DA is concerned that farm attacks of this nature are on the increase, spiralling out of the police’s control.” According to the police, the attackers are still on the run. Meanwhile, six suspects are set to appear in the Vredefort Magistrate’s Court on 6 March in connection with an attack on the farm Goedgedaght in the Vredefort district on 18 January. Thabang Kwetemtheme (33), Khanyile Hluthiy (33), Justice Gxotiswa (37), Sibuleli Nyokama (50), Bongane Hyoni (25) and Malixole Nompetsheni (39) face charges of the possession of an unlicensed firearm and attempted business robbery. They remain in custody.
