The Free State’s 111 death toll for the 2019 festive season, represents a decline of 35% of the previous year. This is according to the provincial Department of Police, Roads and Transport. A total of 84 crashes were recorded, which is a 21% decrease compared to 109 fatal crashes over the same period the previous year. The Lejweleputswa district recorded the highest number of crashes in which 27 people died. The department attributes decrease road fatalities to responsibility among motorists. During this term 805 motorists were arrested. Altogether 770 were arrested for speeding and 35 for driving under the influence of alcohol.
