Feast for talent scouts

2016-06-15 06:00

FOOTBALL teams scouting for talent have flocked to Mangaung to identify potential stars at the South African Football Association (Safa) ABC Motsepe promotion play-offs, which are being played this week.

The play-offs will culminate in the crowning of the winner and the runner-up on Sunday (19/06) at the Dr Molemela Stadium.

Top Premier Soccer League (PSL) scouts who have been spotted are from clubs including the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United, Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars.

Scouts from National First Division (NFD) teams AmaZulu and Royal Eagles have also been seen.

The majority of clubs, both PSL and NFD, have been criss-crossing the country searching for talented players to beef up for the forthcoming 2016-’17 season.

“The weeklong football event is one of those rare moments for special talent, and could be the start of a major football career for lucky players,” said Klip Moremi, Free State Safa secretary.

Four games have been played thus far. These were Group A matches featuring Orbit College, Tornado, Steenberg United and Apollo X1.

David Vilakazi of Free State Stars said there were prospects, but hinted that the players who stood out were mostly matured and not in the u.23 category.

“I’m hoping to see more of the prospective u.23 players in other matches during the week,” said Vilakazi.
