THE Vrystaat Literature Festival, from 11 to 16 July in Bloemfontein, offers something new. The theme, Our Africa, promises to provide all booklovers and readers with food for thought.

The festival was initiated by the University of the Free State (UFS), in partnership with the Vrystaat Arts Festival. Project sponsors include Media24 and Van Rensburg Pathologists, as well as the ATKV, Vlaams Fonds voor de Letteren, Van Ewijck-stigting, Institut Francais, Nederlandse Letterfonds and the Flemish Government.

Afrikaans books and writers will feature prominently, in addition to languages such as Sotho and Zulu. Several authors will celebrate literature in English.

“The aim of the festival, part of the bigger Vrystaat Arts Festival, is to strengthen a culture of reading, not just in the Free State, but nationally,” says Prof. Jonathan Jansen, vice-chancellor and rector of the UFS.

“The festival will market books, as well as embrace new developments in the field of writing.”

Workshops will also feature in the programme. Writers such as Francois Smith and Henning Pieterse, associated with the UFS’s Department of Afrikaans, Dutch, German and French, will offer short courses on creative writing. Johann Roussouw of the Department of Philosophy will give a series of talks on the books of Karel Schoeman.

  • The final festival programme will be launched on 28 April.
