SENEKAL. – The Ratanang Community Nutrition Development Centre (RCNDC) at Matwabeng near Senekal feeds about 300 underprivileged people every day.

These people get their meals from Monday to Friday at 12:00.

The centre has also visited some of these people in need at their homes to provide them with food, because many of them are ill and cannot walk to the centre.

The centre also provides them with fresh fruit and vegetables in order to keep them healthy.

Express Eastern Free State has been reliably informed that many people who come to the centre are unemployed or pensioners.

Koto Makgongoane, a supervisor at the RCNDC, says they are renting the building that they are currently using.

“Unfortunately, it is not suitable for accommodating all the people who come here every day. The MEC of social development, Sisi Ntombela, has, however, promised us a better building. For that, we are grateful.”

He said his organisation’s aim is to eradicate the escalating poverty in the township.

Ratanang was established in 2007 and is situated in the main street of Matwabeng. It is reportedly funded by the Free State Department of Social Development.

The centre has 20 volunteers who are responsible for home-based care and nine staff members.

According to Mothibeli Mpanyane, the financial manager, they need a fence for their vegetable garden.

One of the beneficiaries of the centre’s feeding programme is Abel Lehlabatsane. He is full of praise for what the centre has been doing.

“I am unemployed and have been so for six years. I want to thank Ratanang, because it makes me sleep with something in my stomach. I’ve realised that if you eat well, the mind can function properly,” said Lehlabatsane.
