The Free State Department of Health will investigate damage caused by, as well as the cause of, a fire that broke out at the monumental National District Hospital in Bloemfontein on Monday (27/11).

The department is unsure how much it is going to cost to repair the destroyed kitchen area and other sections that was damaged.

The fire was put out at around 14:50.

The fire has temporarily disrupted the renovations that are underway.

Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson of the department, said the upgrading of the entire hospital was estimated at R98 million.

“The entire hospital is undergoing renovations. The patients’ wards would cost R46 million, while the kitchen and garage would be R51 million,” Mvambi said.

He stated that the source of the fire and the extent of damages was not yet known.

“A full investigation will be conducted as to the cause of the fire. It is known that the damage affected the kitchen store room and the roof of the outpatient department only.

“No injuries occurred at all,” he said, adding that the catering service continued as normal.

Mvambi said the services of the outpatient department of the hospital had been swiftly relocated to the Gateway Clinic.
