First FS Media Awards this weekend

2016-11-16 06:02

At the inaugural Free State Media Awards, the Free State Press Forum will roll out the red carpet for journalists in the province to honour them for their outstanding work. A first for the Free State, the awards will be held on November 19 in the Floreat Hall in the Bram Fischer building in Bloemfontein.

The chief objective of the awards is to celebrate media practitioners who have performed exceptionally and to motivate all media practitioners in the province to strive for improvement.

“In line with the theme of the forum, we strive to raise the bar of journalism by promoting excellence in the media fraternity, both in the private and the public sectors,” says Selloane Khalane, director for brand marketing.

Khalane says entries for the awards were open to all journalists, whether from commercial media houses or locally-based ones and government and private sector communicators. Entries were for print, radio and television.

Categories include Best Print Feature, Best Community News Story, Best Hard News and Best Sports News. Communicators from the public and private sector were also invited to enter.

“The forum saw a need to recognise journalists by celebrating their work to ensure that the mandate of journalists, which is to be the watchdog of society and informing society, is never taken for granted,” says Kamogelo Seekoei, director for strategic planning.

The awards will be supported by the Free State government and other entities.

The forum was founded by Khalane, Seekoei and Matli Mohanoe and was launched in May.
