Five teams to compete for ranking

2018-05-16 06:00

Five football clubs of the Free State competing in the SAB League have reached the highest point of the competition having to compete for promotion to the second-tier rank of the ABC Motsepe League.

The five teams have qualified for promotion play-offs having won in their regions – Mangaung, Thabo Mofutsanyana, Xhariep, Lejweleputswa and Fezile Dabi. They will compete against each other in two streams to decide the two clubs to be promoted to the second-tier league.

The five teams are Glen College (Mangaung), Dortmund (Fezile Dabi), Small Tigers (Thabo Mofutsanyana), Royal Stars (Lejweleputswa) and Matlama (Xhariep).

Of the five clubs, the two finishing top after the play-offs will automatically be promoted to campaign in the provincial stream of the ABC Motsepe League in the 2018-’19 season.

  • The play-offs see the return of Xhariep after the region failed to produce a winner due to unresolved infighting in the leadership of the South African Football Association (Safa). The region has since elected a new leadership which hopes to revive the sport. This year’s winner of the Xhariep region, Matlama, is from Rouxville. This year’s promotion play-offs of the Free State will be staged in Welkom from Friday (18/05) until Sunday (20/05).

The venues are the Zoka Baloyi Stadium and the Charles Vuyo Stadium, both in Thabong, Welkom.
