Fixture a knockout

2018-02-14 06:01

The eagerly-awaited Nedbank Cup last-32 group match between National First Division (NFD) side Super Eagles and top-flight club Free State Stars will take place at Goble Park in Bethlehem today (14/02).

The knockout cup fixture between the two Bethlehem-based clubs has been postponed, since the fixture did not take place on Saturday (10/02) due to a water-logged field.

Referee Victor Gomes inspected the pitch and declared the field unfit for play due to the amount of water on it after heavy rain.

Following this, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) took a decision that this local derby be played today to determine the team to go through to the last-16 stage of the championship.

The match is set to kick off at 18:00.

So far, 12 clubs have proceeded to the round of 16 following this past weekend’s fixtures.

Four of these 12 clubs are of the South African Football Association (Safa) structures and the NFD.

  • They are (in order of qualification): Cape Town City, Amazulu, Ubuntu Cape Town, Mamelodi Sundowns, Maritzburg United, Steenburg United, Chippa United, Orlando Pirates, EC Bees, Royal Eagles, Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic. Today’s fixtures: Platinum Stars and Baroka FC meet at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, while Stellenbosch FC and Highlands Park will battle it out at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.

Both matches are set to start at 19:30.

The 2017-’18 Nedbank Cup round of 16 draws will be conducted live on Thursday (15/02).

The draw will be on SuperSport 4 from 19:30.

All teams eliminated in the last-32 group will get R100 000 in prize money for their effort.

With progress in the competition they are guaranteed exciting incentives ranging from R200 000 to R7 million for the winners.
