Due to the expansion of municipal operations and an influx of people in Postmasburg, the existing waste disposal area was in dire need of an upgrade and maintenance.

A lack of funding for the required equipment created huge environmental and health risks.

Since the Kolomela Mine’s objective is to support development projects of municipal infrastructure and assist the municipality with its service delivery initiatives, the mine decided – in consultation with the municipal management – to contribute a yellow fleet (dump trucks and a shovel) to manage the waste in the area.

The handover took place at an engagement session between the mine and the municipality on the Tsantsabane showgrounds.

George Benjamin, public affairs manager, said the contribution of the yellow fleet will have a huge impact on municipal support to improve the operations and maintenance at the landfill site.

It will also serve to provide adequate service delivery to the community.

The Kolomela Mine reportedly to have thus far spent R4,6 million on the fleet to guarantee better management of domestic waste in Postmasburg.
