Football fest awaits

2017-02-08 06:01

Enthusiastic football fans in the greater Mangaung area is in for a real treat during a jam-packed Interstate Bus Lines (IBL) Promotional Rural Football roadshow.

The month-long sporting event is a partnership between the bus company, which is the main sponsor, and the custodian, the Mangaung Local Football Association (Mangaung LFA).

Focusing on developing football in rural areas, the football competition is run under the auspices of the South African Football Association (Safa).

The roadshow also marks four years of the partnership between Mangaung LFA and the sponsor.

Thando Lepele, IBL spokesperson, says the company has increased their sponsorship value from R100 000 to R120 000 towards the league, due to its success in producing players who go on to sign for established clubs in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

She says the company decided on sponsoring football at grassroots level as part of its community social investment initiative, choosing Mangaung as its ideal area.

“IBL wants to grow this seed of hope for the benefit of the disadvantaged, focusing specifically on aspiring future soccer stars. This league has improved the lives of the youth in the Mangaung Metro areas of Bloemfontein, Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu,” she says.

“Our mission is to help develop talent of the youth playing soccer in the rural areas so they can achieve the dream of playing in the professional league,” says Lepele.

The league makes provision for players in the three league categories of u.13, u.15 and u.17 for both girls’ and boys’ clubs.

According to Lepele, 219 clubs have registered to play in the league, making it the biggest in the Free State, with 6 900 players.

The total numbers of teams per area are: Botshabelo (69), Thaba Nchu (52) and Bloemfontein (98).
