Everyone has a piece of good news inside them. It is just that you do not know how great you are and how much you can do.

Look inside yourself so that you can realise how much potential you have!

These powerful words of one of the modern time’s human relationship experts, Anne Frank, have been echoing non-stop inside me in response to the situation of doubt, self-abasing and impostor syndrome I was trapped in.

Not until I realised that inside me there lies a giant which needed to be released to do great things, could I move on.

This is the situation many of us are subjected to.

They do not know that even though they physically look small or not even have formal education, they have the potential and ability to do great things.

I then took some time pondering on the reasons behind this situation which could be a reality at the highest level of obscurity.

Often it is oversight by associates to realise one’s potential. In this case one individual might be in the position where he or she knows what he or she performs best at and yet there is no one who recognises this.

One may not even be recommended for any senior post by his or her seniors, nor have his or her services deployed somewhere.

The question is how will one know what you are best at if your talents are not put to use?

One can also suffer from impostor syndrome. This is the situation of self-infliction where one underestimates and abases him or herself at the expense of his or her ability to perform well.

One underrates him or herself compared to those he or she thinks are better than him or herself.

It is truly embarrassing that one regards oneself as inefficient when you can be counted amongst the best performers.

How many such people have declined responsibilities on a higher level citing the same reasons, when you know that she or he is a good fit?

This is in defiance of a profound statement which was uttered by someone who said: “Inside every person there lies a big giant waiting to be realised and released.”

I assume that the giant implied here refers to the little looking potential inside an individual which should be allowed to grow gradually until it reaches its full maturity.

Natural and social circumstances that are beyond our control can also be a limiting factor.

Think of the recent cyclone activities that caused havoc in Mozambique and other neighbouring countries.

Scores of people were stripped of their human and social dignity. People were left destitute and misplaced, far from their families.

One man spent the whole day and night in a tree as he had no means of escape until he was whisked away in a helicopter.

In shame he was even afraid to meet people as he felt he had been terribly dehumanised and humiliated.

Social family challenges, ranging from financial needs, loss of members to parental separations could lower one’s dignity and self-confidence – subjecting one to a low level of activity and non-excellence.

However, learning to cope with such ills tirelessly will win the day.

Joyce Meyer, an international TV preacher, advises: “Do not mind your small beginnings, for the same will grow and finally draw others’ attention to look up at you as their hero.”
