Athletes Tshenolo Lemao and Retshidisitswe Mlenga flew the South African flag high at the 2017 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World u.18 Championships held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 12 to 16 July.

Lemao and Mlenga earned gold and silver medals in the 100 m and 200 m finals respectively.

“These Free State-born athletes are a testament that our province is the cradle of sport talent and a home of champions,” says Tankiso Zola, director of communication and IT at the Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

“The department has made strides through the Free State Sport Science Institute to ensure that we identify, nurture and develop sport talent throughout the pro-vince. We continue to support these athletes who represent our province and nation very well at the world stages.”

According to Zola, the Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation strongly believes that there is a serious necessity for more youths to be actively involved in sport, in particular school sport.

Lemao won the 100 m race in a time of 10.57 and bagged a silver medal in the 200 m race with a personal best time of 21.12.

Mlenga finished second in the 100 m race in a time of 10.61 and won the 200 m race in 21.03.
