Winners of awards in seven of 16 categories for Boxing South Africa (BSA) are set to receive cash incentives to reward their efforts.

Tsholofelo Lejaka, BSA chief executive officer, has confirmed the news regarding cash prizes for the 2017 award winners.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Boardwalk Casino in Port Elizabeth on 2 February. The event recognises the positive impact made by athletes, journalists, managers and officials actively involved in the promotion of the sport.

This year is the second time the ceremony will be held after it returned to the calendar in 2016 after more than five years’ absence.

The award categories include the prospect of the year, boxers of the year, fight of the year (men and women), as well as the knockout of the year, a category in which two Free State youth boxers have been nominated.

The two nominees from the Free State are Sihle Jelwane (23) and Lerato Dlamini (25), while local promoter Lebohang Mahoko has been shortlisted for the 2017 promoter of the year award.

Jelwane, currently ranked third in the flyweight division, was nominated for knocking out Gift Pilane during the fierce contest for the Free State title in October last year. His knockout in the third round of the ten-rounder contest saw his opponent hospitalised.

The hard-hitting Dlamini was nominated for pulling off a seven-round stoppage to end a gruelling contest with Sinethemba Bam for the African IBF featherweight youth title in April. Bam was undefeated until he met his match in Dlamini, who proved too strong, as he condemned his opponent to his first defeat. Bam collapsed in the ring and regained consciousness after help by paramedics.

In 2016 Dlamini scored a knockout against Babalo Ncakeni – in 1 minute 16 seconds into the third round.
