The Free State Deaf Sports Federation (FSDSF) is gearing up to host the 2020 National Deaf Development Championship. The games are scheduled to take place in Bloemfontein from 20 to 24 March with seven of the nine provinces represented. The federation identified Bloemfontein as the host for the 2020 edition at which athletes are expected to showcase their talent. Sporting codes they will compete in are netball, football, volleyball and athletics. Events are for athletes born with hearing impairments.According to Dan Tladi, general secretary of the FSDSF, the seven provinces that have confirmed their participation are KwaZulu-Natal, North West, Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Free State. He said the provincial federation was appealing for sponsorships for the successful staging the competition. According to Tladi, sponsorships will cover accommodation and catering for participating teams during the games. He said due to the declining standard of athletics for the deaf in South Africa, the federation has decided to utilise the forthcoming games to feature athletics with the view to sharpen athletes for the 2021 Deaflympics and World Deaf Athletics Championships. According to Tladi, the decline in participation of athletes saw South Africa represented by only one male athlete at the 2017 Deaflympic Games in Turkey.
