The Free State Legislature is on a drive at this year’s Bloem Show to inform and educate the public about its role and mandate to the public.

The legislature’s information desk is in the Protea Hall at the venue of the Bloem Show.

It is open to the public, including learners, to interact.

The chief objective to participate at the show is to educate the public about its core functions.

One of the core functions is ensuring government – comprising of the various departments – carries out the mandate to the voters, irrespective of party affiliation.

The Legislature comprises of members of the different political parties which have representation in it. These political representatives work as a collective to executive its duties.

The Legislature serves as the “watchdog”, monitoring and evaluating the performances of the different departments forming the Free State government.

It is led by Hon. Lucky Mapena, the chairperson of the portfolio committee social services: Health, Education and Social Development.

Mapena encourages members of the public to visit the Legislature’s stall. Here they will learn about the core duties, role and mandate of the legislature and the representation of members serving in it.

“Participation at the show is another ample opportunity for the public to be informed about the Legislature and its mandate.

“It is the right of every public member as a voter to have knowledge and information on what is happening in matters affecting them. We as a collective at the Legislature explains the purpose of its participation at the Bloem Show.

“In exercising its legislative power, it may consider, pass, amend or reject any bill. It may also initiate or prepare legislation and hold the various departments accountable to delivery of socio-economic programmes meant to improve the lives of the people (voters).

“Members of the Legislature report and account to the community who are the electorates. The legislature ensures the monitoring and evaluation of all government programmes which are in place to improve the lives of everyone,” says Mapena.
