The Free State boasts three players in the South African basketball teams that will compete in the African Union Sport Council Region Five Games in Gaborone, Botswana. The province has one player in the boys’ team and two in the girls’ team. This tournament for u.16 players will take place from 7 to 16 December.The Free State players selected for the girls’ side are Palesa Dodo and Mimi Nhlapo, while Lehlohonolo Mphatse was the only boy from the province chosen for the boys’ 12-player squad. The players for the two national squads were chosen after the national trials in Bloemfontein on 21 and 22 September. Players from seven provinces attended the two-day trials. This year is the eighth edition of the games, and it features ten sporting codes.Teams will compete in boxing, basketball, netball, volleyball, athletics (including events for the visually handicapped), football, judo, tennis, gymnastics and swimming. The participating countries include South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Swaziland, Lesotho, Angola and Mozambique.
