FS teams return to league

The Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, and the University of the Free State (UFS) make their return to this year’s varsity football league.

This men’s football competition features eight universities across South Africa.

UFS returns after five years of absence, while CUT missed only one year.

The football sides of both these institutions are credited for their performance in the top sixth bracket at the University Sports South Africa (USSA) championship held last year.

Both teams will hope to reignite their previous successes in the varsity football league. CUT’s side reached the semifinal in 2016 and 2017, while UFS managed to reach the semifinal in 2014.

The tournament will be broadcast live on SuperSport.

CUT and UFS will play their opening fixtures at home on Thursday (25/07).

The Kovsie side, coached by Godfrey Tenoff, will take on the University of Western Cape at Shimla Park at 16:00.

Later CUT, coached by Benny Rakometsi, will face the University of Johannesburg at the CUT’s sports complex. Kick-off is at 18:00.

The home sides task is to fight to finish in the top four to be best place to qualify for the final and ultimately win the trophy that has been eluding them. Also in the competition are defending champions, the Tshwane University of Technology, as well as the University of Pretoria, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the North-West University (Mafikeng).

This will be the seventh edition of the tournament, which was launched in 2013. and has grown into an institution of its own among South African footballer lovers.
