THE Free State Cricket Union (FSCU) rolled out the red carpet for all performers who have contributed towards raising the level of the sport across the board at its annual awards ceremony. Held recently in Bloemfontein’s Protea Hotel Central, the function saw 23 awards presented, recognising the contributions by individuals and union structures such as clubs and regions.

Zola Thamae, FSCU president, said the awards celebrate cricket achievements in the province across its spectrum and the strides individuals have made nationally.

The awards covered different levels, from professionals to grassroots structures.

Individual award recipients: Zika Maduna (mini-cricket administrator of the year), Juan-Dee Oliver (u.13 player of the year), Gerald Coetzee (u.15 player of the year), Phillip Visser (u.17 player of the year), Zandre Ellis (u.17 rural cricket player of the year), Deon Schoombie (rural cricket long term award), Sean Whitehead (u.19 player of the year), Delmari Hoffman (u.19 girls player of the year), Andre Faught (LSEN player of the year), Gregg Hobson (coach of the year), Tefo Classon (differently-abled cricketer of the year), Byron van Wyk (rural cricketer of the year), Trevor Pennels (scorer of the year), Piet Hietbrink (umpire newcomer of the year), Gawie Botha (umpire of the year), Yolandi Potgieter (women’s cricketer player of the year), Tshepo Ntuli (senior provincial team rookie of the year), Leus du Plooy (senior provincial team most improved player of the year), Ramano Terblanche (senior provincial team player of the year) and Dawie Botha (presidential award). Team awards: Central University of Technology, Free State (Free State cricket club championship representative of the year), Thabo Mofutsanyana (associate of the year) and Free State u.15 team (best-performing team of the year).
