Funding methods dubious

2017-11-29 06:01

Revelations regarding the funding methods of the ANC’s provincial congress in Colesberg in May continue to be disclosed.

The DA made their intentions public to report the ANC in the Northern Cape to the Public Protector for using state funds to pay councillors to attend the conference.

They accuse the ANC of immorality, amounting to fraud and manipulation of government programmes, coupled with the abuse of state funds for party political purposes.

The DA claim to be in possession of evidence suggesting a fake government programme that coincided with the congress dates.

According to the DA, the programme was used as a screen to enable ANC councillors to claim travel and accommodation costs from municipal funds.

The DA spokesperson for Social Development, Dr Isak Fritz, and Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL), pointed out in a statement that they are in possession of a copy of a letter, written on the letterhead of the Northern Cape Social Development Department, inviting the mayor of the Hantam Municipality and ANC councillors to attend a workshop regarding the social relief programme.

“We have written confirmation from the department that there were in fact no social relief workshops or related training programmes in Colesberg on the dates in question,” Fritz said.

“Payments more than R17 000 were reportedly made by the Hantam Municipality for travel costs and daily allowances for three ANC councillors, the mayor and his driver, for their attendance of the alleged social relief programme in Colesberg.”

The DA will continue with its own investigations to try and establish the extent of this scam, he said.
