It was with sadness that the community of Lerato Park laid to rest their pillar of strength, Patric Funeka, at the Ramatshela cemetery on Saturday (29/07). Funeka passed away on Friday (21/07) in the Kimberley hospital after a short illness.

He was respected for his selflessness in fighting for development in the community of Lerato Park. Funeka was also a reliable source of news for Express Northern Cape,as he regularly gave updates on the growth and the blunders in his community.

A comrade of Funeka, Alfred Selloane, applauded him for his strong sense of leadership.

He would never compromise about what he stood for in exchange for bribes.

“We will miss his strong presence and loud voice, because that way we learnt a lot about the current political affairs,” said his uncle Johannes Olayi.

Mourners were, however, annoyed about the political drama that unfolded during the last two days of the funeral service between two parties. At the time of his passing, Funeka was the chairperson of Cope since its formation after leaving the ANC in 2009.

“Funeka was a leader and was never power hungry. His passion was in development. That is why he never even contested during the 2011, nor the 2016 elections for councillorship,” said Selloane.
