Girls vaccinated

2016-08-24 06:00

THE Northern Cape Department of Health calls on parents and guardians of girls nine years and older currently in gr. 4 to sign consent forms for their daughters to receive the second dose of 2016 Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination.

According to the department, each girl must receive at least two doses for full effectiveness.

The second round of the HPV campaign, conducted in schools ends on 6 September.

The aim of the campaign is to protect young girls against contracting cervical cancer later in life.

Lulu Mxekezo of the Department of Health elaborated in a statement that the effectiveness of the vaccine was very high if received before sexual debut.

“No girl younger than nine years can be given the vaccine,” read the statement.

Statistics indicate one in every eight women in South Africa will die from complications of cervical cancer.
