When I was a little boy I enjoyed playing soccer in the fields. Sometimes we would take bricks and place them in the middle of the streets to set them as poles to represent entry points for scores.

At times I would score the ball in-between two poles and the members in our team would shout “goal!”, and I would ask myself what that means.

Even though the feeling was good and we had a good score, I would always be intrigued by the cheering and shouting of people for scoring goals.

What is a goal?

A goal is a predetermined achievement that you set before going towards it. Goals are sets of targets that determine the achievement of a certain pursuit in life. The art of goal setting reflects someone who wants to achieve something in life. A goal setter is a trendsetter. Without goals there is nothing to score in life. When you pursue smart goals, you produce smart results.

Setting SMART Goals

The first step in planning is to set goals. In order to direct behaviour and increase effort, your goals must be specific and a good challenge. The art of goal setting must be SMART in principle.

Specific goals command a good course in life, because specifics give life clarity of intent. When you communicate your goals clearly, you will minimise confusion.

Measurable goals are a set of standards that produce a quality outcome as intended. When you measure your goals, you can measure your destiny. Measuring provides a yardstick or an instrument that we can use to monitor progress, growth and failure. As you plan to have short term, medium term and long term goals, you use a measuring tool to track your progress correctly. You cannot grow what you do not measure and if it is not measurable, it is a waste of time and resources.

Attainable goals are achievable. How do you determine whether your goals are achievable? If you have no knowledge whether you can achieve your goals, you will stumble toward a destiny of luck. When you live a lucky life, it is absence of confidence in your potential to achieve your goals. You can only achieve something that you have ability for and you will only be given potential for what you have been set to achieve in life.

Realistic goals mean you have resolved to be authentic in your measure for achieving your objectives. When goals are real, you will not thumbsuck your future. Realistic goals produce confidence in all endeavors. People sometimes just set themselves up for failure, because they do not want to be realistic as far as their ability to achieve objectives. People overcommit for various reasons. It could be to impress their counterparts or perhaps to prove a point. If you know your strength, you will commit based on your ability to achieve. When you stretch yourself to go beyond, that will be based on your confidence in your ability to produce results.

Timely goals are set to be achieved over a certain period of time as set by the goal setter. If you are bound by time to achieve your goals this year, set aside time to do that. You have only twenty four hours and seven days in a week and nothing less and nothing more. It is your responsibility to optimise and maximise your time to enable yourself to achieve your goals.

You must always be aware that sometimes things may not go according to your plans, but let that not be enough excuse of not pursuing your goals in life. Perform to the best of your ability and leave all your excuses behind and pursue your goals. Always try to carry a daily planner with you. Review and monitor your goals periodically and daily.

Finally write down your goals, calculate the cost in achieving your goals. Resolve to start every year with a set of goals and break them down in pieces, because without goals, your life has no sense and you will lack focus in life. Avoid living a life without goals. Goals give your destiny meaning. Life without goals is life without a purpose, and life without a purpose is not life at all.
