Two grandsons who were living with their grandparents are prime suspects in the brutal murder of the elderly couple. The two grandsons, Kabelo Sebotso (18) and Thokozani Gezage (30), briefly appeared in the Thaba Nchu Magistrate’s Court on 15 July. They face charges of arson and two counts of murder. These charges were instituted after their grandparents, Mantwa and Lethakong Sebotso, died in a house fire in Moroka on 6 May. The police reported that the charred bodies of Mantwa (71) and Lethakong (74) were found in the kitchen and lounge respectively. Sgt Martin Xuma, police spokesperson, said the suspects were arrested at a hideout in Palm Ridge, Gauteng, in July. “Preliminary investigation revealed that the couple had a protection order against their two grandsons,” said Xuma. The couple allegedly applied for the restraining order following the grandsons’ constant abuse over money. “It was established that they forcefully demanded money from their grandparents.” Xuma said the suspects remain in custody while investigation continues into the double murder and arson. It is suspected that the couple’s house was torched in broad daylight. “At around 12:00, members of the community alerted the police that a house in Moroka was on fire to a house on fire in Moroka about 12:00,” Xuma said.“The fire department extinguished the flames, after which the police discovered two bodies. A case of murder and arson was opened for investigation.”The accused are expected to reappear in court on 7 August.
