The Material Mart Group was founded in September 1989 with the opening of the first store in Bloemfontein at the Sanlam Plaza in East Burger Street. There was a demand for the latest fashion fabric that was available at the store. The store later moved to a much larger premises in the Sanlam Plaza. It grew from strength to strength and resulted in the opening of five stores. Material Mart expanded its branches to Currie Avenue, Dan Pienaar, and a Fabric World store in Charles Street. The business continued to grow over the years. It also had a branch in Bethlehem, in the eastern Free State. In recent years the high rental prices and the availability of ready-made garments at reduced prices affected the business operations. This led to the closure of the Sanlam Plaza store and the sale of two stores, Currie Avenue store and the Fabric World property, which later also closed down. The remaining store in Daan Pienaar will also close down on 27 July. The entire stock is being sold at 50% of its normal price – cheapest in South Africa. The Material Mart management thanks the Bloemfontein community for its support over the past 30 years the business operated in the city.
