Gunman arrested in Bloem

A 28-YEAR-OLD man is set to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court this week facing charges of attempted murder and the illegal possession of a firearm.

This followed the shooting of a Bangladeshi man on Monday (12/09) in the Bloemfontein City Centre.

Capt. Chaka Marope, Parkroad Police Cluster spokesperson, said the suspect was arrested a few metres from the crime scene and a pistol loaded with five rounds were confiscated upon the arrest.

He said the incident occurred shortly after 08:00 in Henry Street when the victim returned from a prayer session.

“Shortly after opening his car, which was parked in Henry Street, an unknown man approached him. The man pulled out a gun, shot the victim and ran away,” said Marope. He said police members on patrol closed in on the suspected hitman.

Marope said the motive for the shooting is unknown.

“The police are continuing with the investigation and are determining whether the confiscated firearm was involved in any other crimes around Bloemfontein,” he said.
