Hantam Municipality to benefit from project

2018-01-24 06:00

The Department of Water Affairs and Sanitation says people living in the Hantam Local Municipal area will benefit from the R128 million Loeriesfontein Bulk Water Scheme which is currently under construction in Loeriesfontein in the Northern Cape.

According to Amogelang Moholoeng, spokesperson for the Department of Water and Sanitation, an estimated 3 500 people from the area will receive quality and sustainable water from the project, which is expected to be completed this year. The project currently employs 45 locals.

“The project scope includes the construction of a water treatment plant, the construction of nine new boreholes and the re-equipping of ten existing boreholes,” says Moholoeng.

“Furthermore, the project is to construct a 125 kilolitre storage tank and a 944 kilolitre reservoir with a booster pump station in Rheeboksfontein, which will pump 10 litres per second via a 21 km pipeline to Loeriesfontein.”

The water supply in Loeriesfontein has become increasingly unsustainable due to insufficient replenishment by rainfall and the over-extraction of water due to growing water demand.

The project will expand and augment the current groundwater resources, which will ensure sustainable and sufficient quality and quantity of water supply to the community of Loeriesfontein.
