HARDUS VAN DER MERWE (11), a learner of the Newton Primary School, is Express Northern Cape’s SuperSport Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month for May.

He was chosen for his achievements in cross-country, biathlon, long jump and rugby.

Hardus started the year on a fantastic note by winning the South African Biathlon Championship for boys u.11.

He was also the Griqua gold medallist.

He received provincial colours in cross-country and took part in the interprovincial cross-country meeting in Bloemfontein on 21 May, where he ran his race in a South African qualifying time.

At the Northern Cape Athletics Championship, Hardus received a silver medal for long jump boys u.11.

He also plays wing for his school’s u.11A rugby team.

His motto is: Hard work will beat talent, if talent doesn’t work hard.
