An investigation into alleged irregularities surrounding the awarding of a security tender, utilising funds from the Northern Cape’s Department of Education, led to a raid by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit on Thursday (15/02).

Allegations are that the funds were used to pay for a South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) conference without proof that it was held.

The raid was conducted at the Department of Education in Kimberley, targeting various offices, where piles of documents were seized.

Geoffrey van der Merwe, media liaison officer to the MEC of Education, confirms the incident and says the search forms part of an ongoing investigation that was initiated a couple of years ago.

“We provided the Hawks with the necessary cooperation to finalise their investigation,” says Van der Merwe.

No arrests have been made and the investigation continues.
