Truck drivers have benefitted from free health screenings offered by Engen Petroleum as part of the annual driver wellness campaign.

The conducting of daily screenings has gained momentum this year.

The screenings performed on drivers passing through the Engen Upington Truck Stop was expected to continue until Wednesday (15/11).

The Engen Driver Wellness campaign is a mobile health awareness initiative run by Thubelihle Occupational Health and Wellness.

The initiative is reported to have run over a seven-month period, from April to mid-November, reaching 21 sites in five provinces.

Medical services are offered by qualified nurses and councillors who perform blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, tuberculosis, body mass index and HIV/AIDS screening tests.

Mntu Nduvane, Engen’s corporate social investment manager, is quoted in a statement as saying that the aim of the initiative is to remind drivers about the importance of their health and about how life choices impact on their well-being.

“Engen’s Driver Wellness campaign continues to have a massive all-round impact,” Nduvane says in the statement.

“This extends to both the drivers and their families, who benefit from reduced exposure to diseases and greater longevity of a breadwinner, and of course the company itself, in terms of improved worker productivity, skills retention and disease management.”
