The promise to capacitate health governance structures across the province was followed on by the MEC for Health in the Northern Cape, Fufe Makatong, when she embarked on a two-week induction and reorientation drive from 18 to 29 June.

The commitment was made during her budget speech earlier in June to induct and reorientate all appointed health governance structures in the province before the end of the first quarter of the current financial year.

The structures are expected to ensure that the department is efficient and fully operational in the various districts and communities it serves.

Government applied a multi-sectoral approach to the establishment of these structures, named the hospital boards and clinic committees.

All members appointed to serve on the boards and committees come from community structures, organised sectors, non-government organisations and churches, and represent all the diverse communities.

Makatong reportedly emphasised the importance of a shared vision and unity of purpose that seem to have been lacking in the health management and governance.

According to a statement from Lebogang Majaha of the media liaison office, Makatong shared issues and challenges and unpacked the new health turnaround strategic plan, informed by priority needs of all healthcare facilities.

“This was done with a strong view to keep health governance structures abreast with the latest health developments and to ensure they rally behind the vision of health excellence for all,” Majaha’s statement read.

The workshops saw Makatong mandating governance structures, representing 133 primary healthcare facilities, 11 hospitals and 33 community healthcare centres, to immediately embark on the educational drive to communities to understand the departments’ goals and objectives.

The structures are in place to make communities aware that they should present themselves first to community clinics and avoid self-referrals to the hospitals, as hospitals mainly deal with emergencies.
