The Vrystaat Arts Festival presents the award-winning production Hani: the legacy at this year’s festival, taking place from 8 to 14 July in Bloemfontein.

Hani won the Market Theatre Laboratory gold ovation award. This production is one of the variety of South African and international arts programmes to be showcased at this year’s Vrystaat Arts Festival.

The theme for the jam-packed festival is “Migration”, which fits in well with the fact that the productions will be brought from far and wide to meet in the Free State’s capital.

Hani: the legacy is a reflection on the life of Chris Hani, born Martin Thembisile Hani.

He was the leader of the South African Communist Party and chief of staff of uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the armed wing of the ANC.

This year marked 25 years since his assassination on 10 April 1993 in Dawn Park, Boksburg.

This ground-breaking musical combines hip-hop, ballads, traditional music and movement to bring to life the story of the struggle hero Chris Hani in an unforgettable and magical way, therefore honouring his legacy..

This production reflects the grapple with the gap Hani left and shows how his legacy can be used to move forward in a time of enormous political and social challenges.

The production is directed by Leila Henriques.

It will be performed in the kykNET Scaena Theatre located on the campus of the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein.

The performances will be held on 7 July at 20:00, 8 July at 18:00 and 9 July at 10:00.

Tickets cost R130 per person.
