2018-07-11 06:01

Indoor hockey is set to take Kimberley by storm when the Pro Series Indoor (PSI) Kimberley Heats Indoor League takes place officially run over a six week period between in August and September.

Schools and clubs can enter boys’ and girls’ teams (u.13, u.14 and u.16) for the league.

The finals are expected to take place in September.

The opportunity is thanks to former Kimberlite and national men’s Olympic hockey player, Allistar Fredericks.

He will launch this as his own indoor league for junior hockey players in Kimberley.

According to Fredericks, who is the director, the league will be run by current South African player Melrick Maddocks and will take place in the Jim Summers Hall.

He is proud of being granted the franchise rights to run the Kimberley Heats Indoor League, and is looking forward to running it with the same success he had with his Gauteng franchise, the Gauteng Gryphons.

With the launch of the PSI Indoor League, indoor hockey has grown in South Africa in recent years.

Simon Martin, the founder, has turned this into one of the biggest growing sports in the country, with over 2 000 young players attending the PSI nationals in Cape Town annually.

For the national competition, various franchises select the best players from their leagues and compete against each other.

An indoor hockey coaching clinic is scheduled to be hosted in the Jimmy Summers Hall on 9 August.

Parents are urged to bring their children to the clinic to receive coaching from Fredericks, as well as current national hockey players Reeza Rozenburg and Maddocks.

“These coaches were born and bred in Kimberley and would love to give back to the community by shaping future hockey players from the Diamond City,” said Fredericks.

Teams can send an email to Maddocks at melrickmaddocks@gmail.com or Rosenberg at
owrezanow@gmail.com for more information.

Reza can also be called on 079-189-1490.

The trials for the Kimberley Heats Franchise players to participate in the national competition in Cape Townwill also be held in the Jim Summers Hall.

All children who intend to participate in the Kimberly Heats League are welcome to attend.
