BETTY OLIPHANT (64) from Homelite Extension in Kimberley was in high spirits on Monday morning (02/01) when she joined the queue to register her name on the housing waiting list.

This follows instructions from the chairperson of housing at the Sol Plaatje Municipality, Vaughn Settley, that community members must register on the housing list to benefit from the RDP houses and land allocation.

Oliphant, her five children and four grandchildren have been living in a rented shack in a backyard ever since she left her mother’s house in Homevale. She sees light at the end of the tunnel after she and other backyard dwellers in her ward attended a meeting where Settley assured them that the municipality will identify land and allocate it for people in her situation.

“I do not really mind where I am allocated land. All I want is to stay at my own place. Although my landlord treats me and the children as part of their family due to the years we have stayed together, I still want to restore my pride,” revealed the soft-spoken Oliphant. She has been waiting for this day to come and cannot wait to be handed the keys to her own house.

The queue seemed endless at the Homelite Community Hall in Ward 3 where residents had their IDs ready to register their names for the promised land. The waiting list is expected to be handed to the municipality by the ward councillor, Clifford Lewis.

Settley promised that the Sol Plaatje Municipality will issue land available anywhere in its jurisdiction to place all beneficiaries.

Settley had slammed accusations that certain land in certain areas belong to certain people. He emphasised that municipal land belongs to all those who stay on it.

He also urged the residents to stay away from illegal land grabbing and said it slows down the process.

Oliphant hopes that her turn will come and she hopes that government sticks to its promise of prioritising elderly and vulnerable people by pushing them up the list as promised.
