Hospital to carry struggle icon’s name

2018-03-07 06:01

The Kimberley Hospital Complex will be renamed the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in honour of the late struggle icon and founder of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), who died 40 years ago.

Sobukwe died at the Kimberley Hospital due to cancer.

The announcement was made by Northern Cape Premier Sylvia Lucas during the State of the Province Address (Sopa) at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre in Kimberley on Wednesday (28/02).

According to her, the renaming is to retain the revolutionary connection Kimberley as a city has with the South African father of Pan Africanism.

The renaming is expected to be conducted by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture on Wednesday, 21 March. This will be followed by more tribute lectures countrywide.

The Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Trust (RMST), in partnership with the Blackhouse Kollective, revealed that a curated series of events themed “Sobukwe 40 Years On: A Silenced Voice of Liberation” would be held.

A theatre production based on the life of Sobukwe and his wife, Sobukwe my Husband, which was written and directed by Given Jikwana, will be performed by the BAPA Theatre Academy in Cape Town.

Blackhouse Kollective, in partnership with the RMST, will also host a public historic exhibition titled “Sankofa: Returning Forward to Our Past” in Sharpeville.

The announcement of the renaming of the hospital was welcomed by emotional PAC member and a friend of Sobukwe, Daniel Mabe Sekgoro, who wondered why it took government 40 years to realise what his friend had done for Africa as a whole.

“I am lost for words, I am so emotional about this,” said Sekgoro.

“He (Sobukwe) spoke of Azania, he lived for African people. I will never forget him, thus I commend the Northern Cape provincial department for allowing his legacy to live on. We really welcome this gesture,”
