A Bloemfontein man faces a charge of attempted murder after he allegedly shot his 52-year-old wife twice.

The suspect, Lungisani Mazibuko (54), remains in custody until his next appearance in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court.

He briefly appeared in court on Thursday (15/02).

Capt. Chaka Marope, Parkweg police cluster spokesperson, said a charge of the possession of an illegal firearm has been added to the case.

He said the investigation into the attempted murder includes the origin of the gun used during the incident.

“The police had established that the suspect does not have a license to possess such a firearm.

“The firearm used, a Norinco pistol with five rounds, was confiscated and further investigation is being conducted to ascertain the origin of the firearm,” said Marope.

He said the shooting incident reportedly occurred in the early morning of Tuesday, 13 February, in an apartment at a block of flats where the couple stay in Willows, Bloemfontein.

“The suspect handed himself over to the police at around 05:00.

“He stated that he shot his wife at their apartment at the block of flats.

“This apparently followed a bitter domestic dispute that erupted between the two.

“The woman was found lying on the floor with two gunshot wounds, one in the back of her head and the other one in her right arm.

“According to preliminary investigation at the scene, the shooting occurred in the couple’s bedroom in the flat,” said Marope.

He said the victim, who sustained severe gunshot wounds, was admitted to a local hospital in Bloemfontein.
