A commemoration of Human Rights Day will take place on 21 March at the Colesberg Sports Complex, 240 km from Bloemfontein.

This town in the Northern Cape is governed by the Umsobomvu Local Municipality.

The theme of the Department of Justice and Correctional Services and the Department of Arts and Culture’s celebration of Human Rights Month is “The year of unity, socio-economic renewal and nation building”.

Human Rights Day has been commemorated since 21 March 1960 when the communities of Sharpeville and Langa embarked on a protest against pass laws.

The police under the apartheid government shot and killed 69 protesters. Many of them were shot in the back while fleeing.

The tragedy, known as the Sharpeville Massacre, exposed the apartheid government’s deliberate violation of human rights.
