THE Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation invites members of the public to submit input regarding the O.R. Tambo Marathon.

This event was held on the weekend of 16 April in Bloemfontein.

Input and suggestions are part of the department’s plan to improve the forthcoming event in 2017.

This year’s was the first edition of the race.

Tankiso Zola, spokesperson of the department, said the public invitation to submit input followed teething challenges identified.

“The department undertakes to address these challenges in the next edition of the marathon,” said Zola.

“Constructive inputs are being received from those who took part in the marathon. These include runners themselves, as well as other observers. More inputs will be appreciated so that all of us can make this inland marathon the best of the best.”

In the midst of the department’s request for public contribution, persons with disabilities have made a clarion call for their inclusion in the marathon in future.

The Bloemfontein-based visually impaired athlete Louzanne Coetzee has led by example, showing persons with disabilities have what it takes to compete on this level.

She completed the 21,1 km marathon in 1:35. Her participation saw to it that her steady rise to stardom continues.

Coetzee is hoping to exhibit her athletic talent at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Here she will have the opportunity to further show the world what persons with disabilities are capable of doing.
