BLUEGUMBOSCH. – Tumelo Photolo, who hails from Bluegumbosch in Qwa-qwa, is a genius.

At 20 years old, this gr. 11 learner of the Makabelane Technical School has invented a solar cellphone charger using a cellphone cover (pouch).

The charger works with energy sourced from sunlight.

According to Tumelo, the cover has a small battery that stores energy while the cellphone is charged. He says the cover charges the battery during the day and one can also use the accumulated energy at night.

Due to having limited resources, Tumelo only managed to make one charger. The experiment cost him close to R500.

“My uncle Vukani Buthelezi gave me some money after I had presented the idea to him,” says Tumelo.

“I started by putting the idea on paper and then designed the charger.

“Most of the people I showed the idea to, including my principal, Tumelo Mahlaba, could not understand the design until I had completed it. Now it is working.”

The biggest problem Tumelo is faced with, is how to take the idea forward.

“I invite cellphone companies and companies that work with electronics, as well as network providers, to come on board and help me to take this idea forward.

“I have done research and have found that there is nothing like this in the world. I am happy that I have managed to come up with something unique.”

Tumelo says the challenge of creating the charger was sparked by a conversation he had with his classmates during an electrical technology class. They talked about things one could do with solar energy.

“I asked myself what I could do to help my schoolmates. I realised we had a problem with electricity at school – that was always a challenge when we wanted to charge our cellphones. I then came up with this idea.”
