A suspected fraudster, Mpho Johannes Lebepe (33), is expected back in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court in connection with the alleged fraudulent electronic transfer of over R500 000. He briefly appeared in court on 12 June following his arrest in Atteridgeville near Pretoria.

Capt. Zweli Mohobeleli, police spokesperson, says the suspect had allegedly defrauded a 56 year old Bethlehem farmer earlier this month. The farmer had received an email notification of a cash withdrawal of a large sum of money out of his bank account.

“He immediately alerted the banking institution concerned and the police. Two days later, the suspect showed up at a branch in Atteridgeville in Gauteng, where he was about to transfer money into another account to enable a withdrawal and was arrested,” says Mohobeleli.

He says the investigative team is trying to establish a link between the suspect and other fraud cases.
