Jail time piles on for convicts

An elderly woman (67) from Dewetsdorp who survived rape and brutal assault after a robbery in 2016, can breath a sigh of relief after her attacker was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The accused was sentenced along with his accomplice, who was found guilty on a charge of possession of stolen property.

The chief culprit, Mahloko George Mokgosi (26), and his accomplice, Pheelo Edward Jikela (21), were sentenced in the Bloemfontein Regional Court on 21 May.

Mokgosi received a sentence of life imprisonment and Jikela was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for the possession of stolen property.

Sgt Yanga Ngcukana, police spokesperson, said property found in Jikela’s possession had been positively identified as belonging to the victim. He said Mokgosi was found guilty on the counts of robbery, rape and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Ngcukana said the victim had been attacked in her house in Dewetsdorp Township on the night of 14 July. He said investigation revealed that Mokgosi had forcibly entered the house of the victim, who had been sleeping alone.

Ngcukana said the woman was found almost dead.

“A community member found the woman lying on the floor in a pool of blood, and her house ransacked,” said Ngcukana.

“The community member had gone into the house to investigate after hearing a noise from the house. A door was broken to enable members of the police and emergency medical services to enter the house and rescue the victim.

“After raping and assaulting the victim, the attacker had locked the victim inside the house and fled with her property thereafter.”

Ngcukana said intensive investigation, that included the testing of DNA forensic samples, positively linked Mokgosi to the rape, brutal assault and robbery.

He said both Jikela and Mokgosi had already been serving life terms for separate rape incidents. Ngcukana said the men had been sentenced in February for the separate cases.

This means Jikela will serve one life term plus five years and Mokgosi two life terms in prison.
