The police in the Northern Cape welcomed the sentence of 18 years imprisonment that was handed down to Mlimi Elrico Phike (30) from Prieska by the Northern Cape High Court on Thursday (28/06).

This follows Phike’s arrest on 25 June 2017 after he murdered Andre Coby van Staden, the boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend, Patricia Booysen.

According to police spokesperson, Capt. Sergio Kock, Phike stabbed Van Staden, his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend seven times at a tavern in Prieska.

The court ruled that the murder was motivated by jealousy.

The Pixley ka Seme Cluster Commander, Brig. Nomahlubi Sofika, commended the investigative officer, Det. Const. Tsone Mochware, for a job well done.

She lauded her good investigative skills for ensuring that no impunity was granted to the perpetrator, especially as this is a serious and violent crime.
