Mangaung Unite FC’s quest for promotion to the National First Division (NFD) League become a reunion for former Maluti TVET College FC player Thembinkosi Lorch (25) and coach Morena Ramorebodi.

The pair first met in 2012, the year Morena recruited this star player to play for the college side.

The team then campaigned in the Free State’s ABC Motsepe League and ultimately achieved promotion to the NFD League in 2013.

The industrious Orlando Pirates winger Lorch surprised Mangaung players on 22 May by paying them a visit during their preparatory training for the promotion play-offs to inspire them ahead of the daunting task to fight for promotion to the NFD rank.

The Bloemfontein-based outfit is one the nine clubs to compete for promotion at Safa’s national promotion play-offs of the ABC Motsepe League, which is taking place in Cape Town from Tuesday (04/06) to Sunday (09/06).

Ramorebodi and Lorch’s relationship is richly inspired by achievements with their former team Maluti from Qwaqwa. They helped promote Maluti to the professional rank of the NFD League, the second-highest league of South African club football after the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

The Maluti TVET College became the first-ever institution in the Free State to play in a professional league.

One of the highlights by Lorch and Ramorebodi is the historic achievement when their former team Maluti demolished Orlando Pirates by 4-1 in the Nedbank Cup last-32 group stage. This historic defeat occurred at the Charles Mopeli Stadium in Qwaqwa on 25 February 2013.

Maluti’s victory over Pirates is still the greatest in the history of the Nedbank Cup championship.

Lorch, currently playing for Pirates, reunited with his former mentor Ramorebodi to celebrate his individual milestone to win two coveted PSL awards. Destined for stardom, the player scooped up the prestigious Footballer of the Season and Players’ Player of the Year awards at a ceremony in Durban on 19 May.
