Sandisiwe Ndulelisa, a Gr. 9 learner in the Frances Baard Police Cluster, was announced the new junior provincial commissioner after an intense and informative public speaking competition in Upington on 11 August.

The competition, to appoint the junior provincial management, was led by the police in the Northern Cape for learners in Gr. 8 and Gr. 9 in five police clusters.

The programme is the police’s initiative dedicated towards creating a safe and secure environment free from gender-based violence, and crime and drugs through the development of young people who will uphold the moral values and principles of society.

Each cluster was represented by five learners, making the total participants 25.

The position of junior deputy provincial commissioner: crime detection, was given to Zinathi Thomas from the Pixley ka Seme Cluster.

The post of junior deputy provincial commissioner: policing, was taken by Umamele Mudumele, also from the Frances Baard Cluster.

The fourth place, that of junior deputy provincial commissioner: asset management, was awarded to Munyaradzi Marufu from the Frances Baard Cluster.

In the fifth place was Ndawa Mabaye from the Namakwa Cluster. She will be the junior deputy provincial commissioner: human resources management.

Lt Gen Risimati Shivuri, the provincial commissioner, and his provincial management were present at the event. Congratulating the learners, he outlined the valuable expectations of the Junior Commissioner Project in the fight against crime.

“Through the project the youth will learn to take responsibility for their own safety and that of others by taking the lead in the fight against crime”, he said.

The competition was adjudicated by five judges, using an evaluation sheet of the Department of Education to ensure uniformity.
