The Kimberley Children’s Choir outsung choirs from accross the world to win a gold and a silver medal at the tenth edition of the World Choir Games that was held in the City of Tshwane from 4 to 14 July.

According to Estelle Vorster, conductor of the choir, they competed in two categories.

In the category for children’s choirs they achieved 78,13%, earning them a silver medal.

In the category for musica sacra with accompaniment they received a score of 80,13%, earning them a coveted gold medal.

According to Vorster the choir, which was established 27 years ago and which has been affiliated with the Kimberley Academy of Music since 2006, has over 49 children in their ranks.

She said this regional choir consists mostly of learners of various schools in Kimberley and surrounding areas, while about 72% of the members of the choir are made up from children of previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

Although it is a regional choir, most of its members are from Kimberley because it is easier to attend practice sessions which takes place in the Diamond City on Monday nights.

The choir was accompanied to the World Choir Games by Vorster and Matthew van Wyk, an accompanist.

The World Choir Games, hosted by Interkultur, the world’s leading organiser of international choir competitions and festivals since 1988, takes place every two years. According to Vorster the World Choir Games was held for the first time on African soil.

The Kimberley Children’s Choir hopes to go to Flanders in Belgium to compete in the next World Choir Games, taking place in two years time.
